Psalm 77
The Day of Trouble
Believers sometimes go through a time of distress or trouble where God seems distant and and unable to help. The writer of Psalm 77 describes in great detail his own day of trouble. But he also describes a pathway out of the day of trouble. Therefore, this Psalm teaches us how to follow Christ when his footprints cannot be seen.
Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12
The Servant for the Guilty
Servant Song #4
The Mount Everest of Old Testament prophecy — this climatic ‘Servant Song’ in Isaiah predicts with great detail the purpose of the Servant's sufferings. It presents Jesus’ sufferings as mysterious, yet vicarious, and therefore that makes him victorious.
Isaiah 50:4-11
The Servant for the Weary
Servant Song #3
Here Isaiah predicts Jesus as the faithful servant. His faithfulness is demonstrated by his listening to and obeying the word of God despite the suffering that entailed.
Isaiah 49:1-13
The Servant for the Nations
Servant Song #2
Here Isaiah predicts Jesus as the servant for the nations. He fulfils all that God requires through his obedience, and therefore brings a salvation that reaches to the ends of the earth.
Isaiah 42:1-9
The Servant for the Bruised
Servant Song #1
These are predictions of the Lord Jesus some 700 years before he stepped into history. Here Isaiah predicts his mission, his manner and his method for bringing justice to the earth.
1 Peter 1:13-21
Living Hope (Part 3: How to Live It)
By believing the gospel we have the certain hope of eternal salvation. This is a living hope that’s supposed to enrich every aspect of our lives. But it’s often dulled by the struggles of living in this fallen world. This passage shows us how to overcome the dulling of our hope so that we can live hope enriched lives.
1 Peter 1:6-12
Living Hope (Part 2: How It Works)
By believing the gospel we have the hope of eternal salvation. That will bring everlasting joy in the presence of our Lord and Saviour. But to have this living hope means we can already experience that end-time joy in the present, even in the midst of suffering.
